Leaky Bag

accountability acknowledge focus guilt procrastination Apr 19, 2022

Do you know the feeling when you should do something and end up procrastinating?

Yeah, me too. It's called guilt.

Guilt is an interesting feeling because it's self-inflicted. Well, if I'm honest, all emotions are self-inflicted. But guilt carries a different type of uncomfortableness than most feelings.

It's like my coach Rob Reynosa told me about carrying a "leaky bag." We can pretend the bag is fine, but really there is this undertone of something is off. And the longer we ignore all of the holes that are seeping water, the more guilt we pile onto ourselves.

You see, guilt siphons our focus and adds unnecessary pressure. It's as if we ignore what we should do, feel guilty, ignore some more, and some more... and we find ourselves in a vicious cycle.

But the good news is that we can break its addictive hold on our peace of mind.

This is where awareness plays a significant role in loosening guilt's grip.

Once we recognize the familiar feeling, we can ask ourselves, "What am I ignoring or NOT doing that needs my attention?"

It's not the sexiest answer, but it will help you face the leaky bag.
