Buried or Planted?

betrayal challenge empowered experience forgiveness grieving healing process move forward pain perspective planting seeds process space time tool Jun 29, 2022

Have you ever felt betrayed? I'm guessing if you've lived life long enough, at some point, you have felt its sting. And boy, does it hurt.

All of the secrecy, dishonesty, and lack of support can feel brutal.

I'm not here to pretend I'm some saint. I made some decisions that were acts of betrayal to people I cared about. It was excruciating for everyone involved.

And then I've experienced being betrayed by people I care about too. It's like being punched in the gut. The wind and the sails were knocked out, and that's the PG version.

Because I have been on both ends of the stick and am currently moving through this myself, I'd like to share some things that are helping me process the pain.

  1. The most important part of the healing process is to give yourself enough time and space to grieve and feel the pain. This part should not have a time limit. It can take years to uncover layers of unconscious effects.
  2. Be gentle with yourself during this time. And discover new ways to feel safe again. They don't have to be some grand gestures. Something as simple as placing your hands over your heart and Re-Minding yourself, you are loved, and you are safe.
  3. Then when you're ready, you can begin using the magical power of forgiveness work. In my tool kit for moving through these difficult moments, I started the practice of forgiveness of others AND forgiveness for myself. Both parts are crucial to the healing process. But again, only start this when you feel ready. There's no need to force anything.
  4. You'll also want to maintain a level of trust in others. Because the betrayal has broken trust in people you care about, this part is also crucial. Even if it's with one person, find someone who is completely in your corner. This will also help you feel like you don't have to go through it alone.
  5. Here is the most challenging and the most empowering part of the whole process: Have the courage to look within and see what role you played in the experience. This is only AFTER you have given yourself enough time to move through pain. From this perspective, no matter how deep the cuts are, you get to discover the GOLD that is ready to come to light.

I recently heard this quote related to this topic, and it blew my mind.

"Sometimes, when you are in a dark place, you think you have been buried. But actually, you have been planted." WOW.

We have just been planted, my friend.

With lots of LOVE,
Teresa
