Un-stucking the Creative Process

You and I are really lucky people. We get to use dance, music, film, and many other art forms to express ourselves. We choose to give voice to our inner visions in hopes of feeling something along the way. And if someone else sees it and sends us some love, that's always a good feeling too.

Being a Creative means, we get to create something out of nothing. How magical! I love the creative process until I DON'T FEEL IT!

Throughout the decades of choreographing, hitting that wall is the WORST! And as a dancer, we're so in tune with our bodies that once we feel that energetic halt, it's hard to get back into the freeing feeling of being in the FLOW.

So how do I get unstuck?

1. I walk away. I literally walk away from the creative block I'm feeling. I immediately take note that I'm thinking about the next move instead of allowing it.
2. When I come back to the creative process, I start moving with whatever feels natural. (Can you tell "Feel" is the operative word of the day? Because without the internal inspiration, it starts to become work. And I don't want to work for my art. I want to let it out.) Once I get moving, I allow myself to try different things until something clicks beyond the resistant edge—aah, relief.
3. If there seems to be no relief in sight, I give myself permission to completely scratch the whole idea. Sometimes inspiration comes in the form of a burp, and that's all it is meant to be, which frees me up to do the next creative adventure.

Creativity is about the process, and I learn something new every time I show up for my art. When I get into that tunnel of focus and inspiration is why I'm here. I love it. That's the gift. And I accept. Yes! And Thank You, God! (We can get into THAT topic another time!)

My hope for you is that your creative process is fulfilling and allows your True Self to be seen. So don't let that creative resistance be the reason why you hide. Getting to the other side of the wall is where your art lives.
