Nothing Has Meaning.

Today I read the first lesson in A Course In Miracles.

It says, "Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything."

The purpose of this lesson is to recognize how we choose to create meaning with everything we see. This is how we make everything we experience more or less important, valuable, or meaningful.

From the first lesson, we are to look at things in our immediate surroundings and acknowledge nothing has meaning. NOTHING HAS MEANING!

This concept was a bit challenging for me when I did this exercise because I would look at certain things and feel an emotional tie to them. For instance, my niece drew a rainbow that's hanging on my wall, and I looked at it and said, "That drawing has no meaning."

Even though I said it internally, it didn't sit well with me. And that's because it has meaning.

Yet think about this.

I could hand you my niece's drawing of the rainbow, and you might think it's cute, but you would not be emotionally tied to it the way I am. That's because you are not attaching meaning to it.

So when I look at it from your perspective, the drawing has no intrinsic meaning at all. It's just a drawing a little girl drew one day. And the only reason it's on my wall is that that little girl is someone who is special to me, so I've ascribed weight, specialness, and meaning from my perspective.

No wonder we are all at war with one another. 

We all put weight on different aspects of life, believing everyone else has to agree on how WE see them.

If you understand this point, you get the opportunity to let go of needing others to change so that you can be happy.

And that's no small feat.

Here's to letting go of defending meaningless things, ideas, and even people. Yes, people are a part of the lesson. There are no exceptions to the rule.

This one is definitely a stretch. And also a life-changer.
