Guilty.

Guilt. What is it good for?

It gnaws at you even when you think you're not thinking about the thing you feel guilty about. It's as if it sucks up a tiny bit of life force with its persistence. And until the issue is resolved, the feeling doesn't go away. So we either keep pushing forward, hoping it will go away, or we face it.

And wouldn't we rather jump off a cliff than face our self-imposed blame?

At least we can admit our ego is doing its best to keep us on the moral, right, and good path. It tells us, " It's okay to justify that thing you did or didn't do. You're not wrong. They are. It's okay. You'll do better next time."

And that's how the ego works to help us move past the pain. Yet if we listen to our egos, it only makes things worse.

You see, feeling guilty is an addiction in and of itself. So we will create the same circumstances over and over again so that we can be reminded of feeling guilty. Like it's a badge of honor. "See, I'm a good person. I didn't mean it! I'm sorry."

And we hold onto our shortcomings to reinforce our unworthiness. Then we find ourselves redoing what we said we weren't going to do all over again! It's a vicious self-inflicted cycle.

So again, what's the point of feeling guilty if we keep holding onto old habits?

I guess the effective way to move through guilt is by cleaning up our side of the street. This means letting go of the feelings that keep us chained to the past. We look at where we go wrong and course correct the next time. And in the meantime, learn to give ourselves a little grace as we move towards changing for the better.

With lots of LOVE,
Teresa
