For the Love of It

change creative dance dance industry evolution experience feelings journey past with love Jul 10, 2022

Yoooooooooooooooo! I'm so hyped right now!

I just found a box of old videos on Mini-DV8 and busted out my Mini-DV8 camera!

There are so many dance gems captured that I don't know what to do with myself. Lol. It seems like I filmed a good chunk of footage from 2000 to 2005. And all of this before YouTube. It's like I have my own personal time capsule.

All of the classes, rehearsals, practices, making up choreography in my house, and performances are thankfully captured on film. Not to mention all of the talented people who came to the classes that I was able to share these experiences with.

What's interesting is the feeling that no one cared there was a camera in the room. There is a definite vibe of genuine moments. It's like the camera is a fly on the wall, and people were DANCING!!! So much innocence and passion all at once.

As with all things in life, things evolve. The dance industry has changed, and I think the biggest difference was the naiveness. That innocence kept the dance journey pure at heart.

Nowadays, it's tainted with how many followers a person has, making sure you don't mess up while the videographer is filming groups, and creating enough dance content for social media likes and follows. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. It's just different.

I know how unique the late '90s early 2000s were. And I want to bring that feeling back.

Currently, I'm putting pieces of the puzzle together to start teaching in LA again. And this memory of how it used to feel is a big part of the experience I want to create for the newer generations. I know how much dancers need this. I need it.

Here's to getting back to why we dance or do anything as creative people. Which is: Do it for the love of it.

With lots of LOVE,
Teresa
